Wilsonton was officially named in 1981 and is believed to honour James T. Wilson, an 1870s Toowoomba businessman and supporter of the Toowoomba Agricultural Society; its boundaries were redrawn in 2006 when Wilsonton Heights was gazetted as a separate suburb. Wilsonton State School has been teaching in the suburb since 5 February 1894, and Sacred Heart Primary School and Fairview Heights State School followed in 1968 and 1995.
